Blogging has its price

With Freedom Comes Responsibility

Gone are the days when one could say anything behind the anonymity of cyberspace and get away with it

Read my article on blogging in Asia in The Bangkok Times (October 25, 2005). Click over the heading to read it online.

Well written - and well said, Zafar. Don't forget there are also the bloggers who use the medium to cause needless hurt to others. That's surely irresponsible blogging too and worth a follow-up article?

Thanks Sharon. I know what you are talking about. Definitely worth a follow up article. But not now, as am too busy with other writing projects. Why don't you write something about it?

Maybe I will Zafar ...

Good luck with your projects!

I know Singapore a little bit for having studying there.
I was surprised to see Xiaxue's blog, which is silly, apolitical but fun and sometimes witty.
You're fine as long as you don't talk about politics I suppose, especially Singapore's politics.

Be carefull Zafar ;-)

Thanks Roman. I have not said anything about Singapore's politics. The article is about blogging, and the episode of Singaporean bloggers was well-discussed here in the Singaporean media. Bloggers need to be careful about what they are saying--that's the point of the piece. But thanks for the advice anyway.

Thank you Sharon. Please let me know if you write something on this issue.

Hi Zafar,

I enjoyed reading your article and it is the last sentence that has most impact - With freedom comes responsibility, right?

Most certainly right!

To comment and give one's views about any particular topic/book/movie and so on (in any form whether it is in a blog, newspaper article or even a one-to-one conversation) is certainly a person's right. The freedom to do so should be encouraged and applauded. If anything at all, it is a a different point of view. But to hurt another's feelings, be plain nasty and say then defend their actions by saying that it's their right to do so, now that amounts to being completely irresponsible.

Thank you very much for sharing this article.

Would love to read a follow-up article by either you or Sharon!
